Noah wanted to play tball this year and I figured I would sit around at each practice anyway so I might as well coach. It’s been an interesting experience for me and a total blast for Noah (first row far left). I’ve seen Noah get a lot better over the past 4 weeks. His swing is great, he throws really well and turns his shoulders, and he gets in front of every grounder and doesn’t let much past him.
Each tball game is run the same: Every kid gets an at bat in each of the 3 innings that we play. Every hit is a single and the last up drives them all home. We play 2 games a week and in tball there are no more practices once games start. We all show up about a half hour early to practice our grounders and throwing to first base.
Thursday’s game was interesting:
1. During practice, one little boy was standing near 2nd base. I hit a grounder to 3rd and the boy was supposed to throw to 1st. He aimed at first but he threw to 2nd where the first little boy wasn’t paying attention. He took a nice shot to the cup.
2. Still during practice the same little boy who just took the cup shot was still standing at 2nd base. I hit a grounder to 3rd and the boy was supposed to throw to 1st. He aimed at first but he threw to 2nd again where the same little boy who took the cup shot now got a shot to the chiclets (teeth).
3. During the 2nd inning, two other boys on our team had to leave the field for a potty break.
4. During the 3rd inning, one little boy who should have taken the potty break during the 2nd inning decided to just fill his pants with pee right on the field and ignore it. None of the other boys saw it so I didn’t say anything and let the little guy keep his dignity.
5. I finally went nearly horse telling the kids to pay attention so I stopped and figured if they all took a couple more shots to the grill (face) then maybe they’ll learn.
6. Afterwards all the kids got a great snack (their favorite part of the whole day).
