Can anybody beat this one?
I was wandering around Lowe’s the last week in September. The date was Sept. 29th. They had their entire stock of Christmas items out, lit up, and moving. I could not have been more disgusted and couldn’t believe my eyes. Christmas is officially a joke. More thoughts to come…
It is disturbing. I almost want to opt out and find some way to celebrate the incarnation. I used this very thing as an example of how the Chrsitian story can be subverted or co-opted for other aims than those of the gospel.

Yes, Christmas is a joke. A huge consumerist joke. Last year, my family decided on a handmade Christmas, which in turn led to a discussion about the day itself. We came to the conclusion that it should be a day of blessings and family and thus, we will treat it as such. This being the first real year of putting that into practice, we’ll see how it goes. On the same subject, we scrappled with the idea of Santa Clause in general, and debated on the many things that can go wrong with the whole debacle. Not wanting to be complete scrooges, we decided that our little girl would learn about the gift of giving to others and the true story of how Santa came to be. She is four and is truly in love with the idea of giving to the “babies” who don’t have all the wonderful things she has. This poses a problem when she starts school of course, as we will have to tell her to keep the little “Santa” tidbit to herself. What a mess I tell you. You could have days long conversations about it!

We have to remember that Christmas was a pagan holiday to begin with. Winter Solstice or Yule was celebrated long before the Christians decided to make it the day we celebate the birth of Christ.
It does make me a bit frustrated to see Halloween decorations out with Christmas decorations, but with the economy the way it is, I think Christmas decorations were the markets biggest sell last year and they are desperately needing shoppers out there. So why not push it early. It does get earlier and earlier every year. But they also sell winter clothes in the summer and summer clothes in the winter. Their marketing schemes are frustrating no matter what it is.
