The other day I was wondering when things changed. Luke & I went on an errand to Wal-Mart and it happened to be pouring rain (unusual for Reno). The puddles were forming quickly in the parking lot and no sooner was Luke out of the car as he was into a huge puddle. I was just about to yell at him and then I paused:
“At what point did I make the switch from jumping into puddles to avoiding them? Was it an age? A grade? A status? Did it just become uncomfortable? When did jumping into puddles lose it’s joy?”
So I jumped in with him.
I was soaked and I didn’t have much fun personally but he seemed to think that his Daddy was full of good times for years to come.
I think so often as we get older, we lose site of the small things that brought us joy because we no longer carry a sense of naïveté about us. As adults, we deal with a constant barrage of bills and responsibilities that we consider necessary as a part of life. We rush here, rush there, trying to make our mark in the world, considering acts of puddle jumping a waste of time because it does not fit into our schedule of getting out, getting it done and moving on. Do you remember when you were in grade school and time seemed to stand still? Days were never-ending and you would occasionally utter the words, “I’m bored”? To children it comes down to two things, either it’s fun, or it’s not. Wouldn’t it be great to apply that naïveté to daily adult life?

As I looked at pictures from a friends photos on facebook, I thought to myself, ” I hope I remember to let my kids get dirty.” (her son was covered head to toe in mud since the back yard had no grass and it had just rained. All he had on was his diaper. I’m sure it was a summer day. You could tell by his face he was in heaven.

My guess is you stop jumping into puddles about the time you start paying for carpets or washing clothes.
